Everyday holds wonderful manifestations of God's love. He teaches me lessons through my children and the journey of life. I found out that one just has to open their eyes and start looking at the mundane in a creative way.

Jamaica Clinic
Dija Henry

It's been a few days since I've been back in the US and I feel like a changed woman (and an extremely tired, woman). Being in Jamaica definitely has a huge influence in your attitude! The commonly known slogan "no problem, mon" will seep into your conversation easily. The sunshine, beach, and unprocessed, natural food will do that to a person! I was so blessed to meet many family members and experience living history of my family. My grandmother is doing well and alert at 96 years old. She and many others could pass for 25 years younger easily! Jamaica is a rich and beautiful country and I hope that you can visit there one day!

Last Thursday we were able to open the clinic to residence in the community to receive free blood pressure screenings as well as glucose screenings. I was surprised to see young people as well as older adults who looked healthy to have soaring blood pressures as well as high glucose levels. One lady in particular worried us with a blood pressure of 240/160! We directed her to see her doctor IMMEDIATELY! My sister did diabetic foot screenings and had one returning patient on Saturday to take care of a foot wound. My sister and I gave a small wellness lecture on Blood pressure as well as general preventative wellness. My heart was really burdened as I encouraged the people to eat frequent small meals to help their HDL (good cholesterol) levels stay higher and one pastor responded with "what if a person only has enough food for one meal?" I was burdened because this is a real obstacle for some people. However, I do not feel that it is an insurmountable obstacle. Health is not only for the rich and hopefully we can find ways to help in this area as well.

There is a great need for the people of the district to have a closer clinic because the next clinic is a few miles away and most do not have cars or funds for taxis. The people of the district were very glad for this awaited day. My mother also has built small apartments onto the back of the clinic for visitors to stay in and help when they come down. If you have a background in the health field, or just want to help please feel free to contact me through email.

I am working on a short documentary about the clinic and hope to share that with you sometime next month.

For more information you can check out the mission website.

Please leave a comment and have a blessed day!

Wow!!!! Sounds like an awesome trip!!!! It was really a missionary trip, you did a lot of helping. Hope you also got some rest. Puerto Rico is the same, very relaxed attitude and yes, great unprocessed food. My grandmother is 96 as well! I would love to visit Jamaica one day. I have been to Barbados too and loved it. Thanks for sharing!
