I just finished a book called The Janitor by Todd Hopkins and Ray Hilbert. I really thought the premise of the book was really good. An older janitor named Bob, who used to be a business man, helps a young CEO transform his company and his own life.
However, the execution left me a little disappointed. At times it sounded like a business or life self help book. Whatever was thought was said. And that's not real life. The plot was predictable as well. But for some reason, the words still spoke to me. Bob shares 6 directives about life from his late wife Alice. Alice was actually my favorite character and she never directly spoke once in the book.
I told my friend who had lent me this book that it reminded me of my first year out of college. I had married my then boyfriend, moved to a new city and got a job at Linens n things as a cashier. I was so bummed. Five years of school and two degrees later to end up as a cashier. Now don't get me wrong, the discount was great as it helped us get what we needed for our home, but I was on my high and mighty post graduate horse. I remember leaving from work for Fazoli's to have lunch one day and the place was quite empty for 12pm on a weekday in the middle of the shopping square. An older man came by to give me my routine breadsticks. This man changed my life and he barely said a word to me. He served me that breadstick like I was a princess, he cleaned and organized tables like he worked for the king. This breadstick man commanded dignity and respect simply because he worked with integrity. I went back to work a changed person. A repentant person. I have had a few jobs since then and my attitude is now very different. I've been a fitness intern, aerobics instructor, personal trainer, wellness coach, and now Arbonne consultant and stay at home mom, and I take pride in it. It's taken me a while, and I still waver, but to know that CEO or janitor you must work like you are working for the most powerful employer in the universe-the King of Kings and top CEO.
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
