Okay, so I'm in chapter 8 of my bible study: Lord I want to know you by Kay Arthur. The title is "The Lord Will Provide" and the name studied is Jehovah Jireh. We looked at Genesis 22:1-19 where God asks Abraham to sacrifice his only son whom he loved. This is not an easy one to swallow. After all, this is the promised son to Sarah and Abraham. I used to look at this scripture and think that God wanted to see if Abraham loved God more than his promised son, Isaac. And subsequently, God provided for Abraham because of his obedience by providing the ram in the thicket as the sacrifice. Which may be true on some level. But I realized that God was creating an illustration of His love for us.
1. God sacrificed His one and only son whom He loved: Jesus
2. We should have been the one to die: like Isaac
3. God provided the sacrifice in our place : the ram caught in the thicket
This really touched my heart on so many levels. God knew what the outcome would be but Abraham HAD to obey God in order to get the illustration of what Jesus would do one day for all of humankind! Praise God!
